2008 Lincoln Navigator- Company History

Lincoln is a brand name in itself for close to a century. This American luxury automobile brand is known all over the world for its first class luxury comfort and style. The automobile manufacturing company operated under the Ford Motor Company. This company came into existence in 1917 after the initiative taken by Henry M. Leland. His sole motive to start this company was to build Liberty aircraft engines. Henry M. Leland named the company ‘Lincoln’ in honor of his longtime hero, Abraham Lincoln for whom he had even voted in the first presidential elections.

After World War I, the company's factories were retooled to manufacture luxury automobiles. Ford Motor Company acquired the company in 1922. Till date Ford Motor Company owns and manufactures different cars under the name of Lincoln in its Lincoln-Mercury division. It took no time for Lincoln to emerge as one of America's top selling luxury brands alongside Cadillac and Duesenberg. Since its inception, Lincoln has been manufacturing different types of vehicles that are mostly targeted for upscale markets. Interestingly, Henry M. Leland the founder of Lincoln also founded its prevalent competitor Cadillac. He did so after the acquirement of the assets by The Henry Ford Company. During the era of 1920s, Lincoln launched the most popular custom-built car, 1922 Lincoln Town Car. This car was designed for Henry Ford.

Lincoln had made high quality limousines for the U.S. President. The very first car that was specially designed for Presidential use was the 1939 Lincoln V12 convertible "Sunshine Special". Franklin D. Roosevelt used the car. Presidents Truman, Eisenhower and Kennedy used Lincoln Cosmopolitan called the “Bubble Top”. Presently, Lincoln vehicles are available in the United States, Mexico, Canada, Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands, South Korea, and the Middle East.

Lincoln was the best selling luxury marquee in the United States until 1998. After this period, Lincoln started losing its hold on the market. It was found that the reason behind the recent slide in sales is due to the failure of three new models- the MKS luxury sedan, MKZ sport sedan and MKZ crossover sport utility vehicle. Presently, Lincoln is changing to a new naming system based upon the "Mark" name that was in use since the 1950s. Now, most of the Lincoln models can be seen having a three-letter name starting "MK". The change will not be reflected in the Navigator and Town Car. But all other models will soon be seen using this convention. Some of the current models available in the market are Lincoln Mark LT, Lincoln MKS, Lincoln MKX, Lincoln MKZ, Lincoln Navigator, Lincoln Town Car, Lincoln LS, Lincoln Aviator, Lincoln Blackwood, Lincoln Continental, Lincoln Mark Series and Lincoln Zephyr.

There are many Lincoln vehicles that are not manufactured today. Some of them are Lincoln L-series, Lincoln K-series, Lincoln-Zephyr, Lincoln-Zephyr Continental, Lincoln Custom, Lincoln Sport, Lincoln Cosmopolitan, Lincoln Lido, Lincoln Custom, Lincoln Capri, Lincoln Premiere and Lincoln Versailles.
